I am a stay at home mom with over 5 years of Human Resource experience under my belt however I would like to be able to continue to stay at home with my special needs son in addition to earning an income. I have seen commercials for schools that offer medical billingcoding training and the fact that you can work from home. Does anyone have any experience andor advice with this I am thinking of going back to school but if its going to be hard to find a good job that will allow me to work from home I dont want to invest time or resources in it.

Medical billing and coding is an excellent career choice especially in todays economy. First off no matter what the state of the economy is people will still need to see doctors. A healthcare career is stable. Second if you are worried about healthcare changes even if the government were to take over healthcare there would still need to be people to code medical records. I dont think that people will be able to walk into the ER and get treatment and leave without some sort of record of the visit besides the patients medical record.

I do medical it can be boring and the money is like all the hype on commercials make it sound. I did not take courses for billing I have worked in the medical invironment for 10 years and was taught in office how to do It is pretty simple as long as you keep up with the insurance guidlines. Even though everything is electronic the information has to get into the system and codes still need to be looked up. There are still many insurances that arent electronic and many secondaries need paper claims too.

If you do decide to take the course I would reccommend you check with a local community college before taking one of the online classes. That way if a few days into it you decide you dont like it you can drop the class and get reimbursed.

Sorry to say you have to hit the pavement girl. Go out to hospitals doctors offices dentist offices etc. Read the help wanted section of the local newspaper. Go back to the community college and see if they have a referral program that can help you find openings for work. As a medical biller you are caught in the middle. Insurance companies who really drag their feet in making payments and the patients who all too often dont have the financial means to pay. I know of no medical billing job that lets you work at home.

You get tapes of diagnosis to transcribe and then you put it to disk and or paper for filing. Good luck hope this helps.

I am a Bryant Stratton online student. I am majoring in the medical administrative assistant program. I like online school much better than the classroom. It is very convenient. Free tutoring is available online if you need it. The instructors post their phone number too so you have all the help you need. It really isnt that hard. We have to participate in discussion forums atleast 3 times a week. Students help each other in these discussion forums. The only difference is you are not physiclly there at the school.

When I graduate I expect to get a part time job as a medical secretary. If you want to go back to school you can tranfer to a 4 yr. College with no problem. The school has revised their classes to make sure credits are transferrable. People who dont know what they are talking about talk crap about these schools. Most employers expect 2 yrs. Of experience as a medical secretary before being hired fulltime. You can get certified as a coder but you still need 2 yrs. Experience as a medical secretary. I would volunteer at a hospital if you can.

The school has an internship program too. At my doctors there is a new intern there. There are many doctors offices. Getting a job now is hard for everyone at this time but you chose a good field. You will get a job.
